An Opaque and Lengthy Road to Landmark Status is the first investigative article in a series examining the workings of New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission. This is excellent reading for anyone wondering what happens to requests for landmarks and historic districts.
FRIENDS’ work to expand the Upper East Side Historic District, our efforts to save the Kean House and to preserve Modern architecture are highlighted as key examples of preservation advocacy in the city.
Stunning photos of the Kean House are showcased in the article and don’t miss the fun and informative map included with the online version.
Sadly, time has run out for the Kean House. This Fall, the upper floors, the leaded glass windows and the carved doors have been demolished, leaving a one-story ruin on Lexington Avenue. But its not too late for the other 196 buildings proposed for protection. Lets hope the LPC will do the right thing and move forward on this much needed designation!
Enjoy the article and Happy Thanksgiving from FRIENDS.
