FRIENDS' Testimony:

Over the years, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum has been an excellent steward of the iconic Carnegie Mansion. We hope that such care and concern will be carried through to this project, and into the future.

Our Preservation Committee understands that the Smithsonian Institution has worked diligently to develop a proposal that would minimize the impact of new grates to the pink granite sidewalk. However, as part of the public realm, this rare, undisturbed piece of historic fabric surrounding the entire structure, merits conscientious preservation. Our committee hopes the grates can instead be located within the complex gates, leaving the granite sidewalk undisturbed. FRIENDS respectfully requests that the Commission require the applicant to exhaust all possible solutions before compromising the integrity of this historic fabric.
