FRIENDS of the Upper East Side Historic Districts is pleased to announce the expansion of the Upper East Side Historic District on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. This was a significant milestone in the recognition of the architecture and history of the neighborhood, providing tax incentives and protection against federally funded projects. However, this will not protect buildings from demolition or damaging alterations. It is only through designation at the local level by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) that the architecture and scale of the neighborhood will be protected and preserved (learn how you can help).
In conjunction with the National and New York State listing of the district, FRIENDS developed a web exhibit to share our research and findings with as wide an audience as possible. In this site, you can browse through a catalogue of all 197 buildings within the expansion.
