Modern Architecture on the Upper East Side: Landmarks of the Future
In 2001/2002 , FRIENDS’ sponsored an exhibit on potential Modern landmarks on the Upper East Side. The Upper East Side boasts a surprisingly large number of outstanding modern structures. With this exhibition, we hope to promote a greater appreciation and understanding of modern architecture on the Upper East Side by highlighting distinguished modern buildings located outside the area’s historic districts. It is our hope that this exhibition will focus attention of the often-forgotten modern architecture of the Upper East Side and lead to the designation and preservation of this important legacy.

Modern Architecture UPDATE: The good news first. Manhattan House, New York City’s first “white brick” apartment building located at 200 East 66th Street was designated an individual New York City landmark in October of 2007. Manhattan House was highlighted in Friends’ exhibit and catalogue and has been the focus of a FRIENDS advocacy campaign since that time. The bad news. Since our exhibit, The Beekman Theater and Block (Fellheimer & Wagner, 1952) and the Group Residence for Young Adults (Horace Ginsbern & Associates, Architects, 1968) have been demolished and Cinemas I and II (Abraham W. Geller Associates, 1962) has been heavily altered, all despite overwhelming community support for their designation as individual New York City landmarks.
